I’m not ready yet. I can’t witness to others, they’ll think I’m strange. I don’t have the ability to persuade someone to follow Christ. What was I thinking?
Being back at college has made me look at my faith and relationship with God in a new light. Over the summer, I had the opportunity to grow in my relationship with Christ. I was fearful about coming back to school. When you’ve got so many other things going on: classes, practices, new friendships, studying, and sleep; In the past, I’ve let God slip onto the back burner. During my quiet time today, I read 2 passages entitled “Missionary Weapons” in My Utmost for His Highest.
The first passage highlighted the importance of a daily worship time. I believe I’ve heard “where you are is your battleground” time and time again, but this text allowed me to wrap my mind around the concept. It’s true- we turn to Christ in times of need and in times of crisis. And while that is not wrong, we cannot ignore Christ and his abilities when times aren’t difficult. Oswald Chambers writes:
“… when the crisis comes, instead of being fit for battle, you will be revealed as being unfit. Crises always reveal a person’s true character.”
I began to think, how many people wait around for crises? Don’t we usually try to avoid them? I moved on to the next paragraph:
“If your worship is right in your private relationship with God, then when He sets you free, you will be ready.”
It’s a simple concept, yet it’s complexity is evident. We are made to worship our Lord, and by worshiping and listening to Him, He is preparing us for what we will face. I go to college so that I can learn. I learn so that I will have an education for the future. I need to work on applying the same concept with my relationship with God; I worship Him so that I can draw nearer to Him, and through this I have a place secured in heaven.
